Britain’s General Union, Join us

This was a concept brought up by unions wanting to be involved in the city of culture through the Trade Council. Hull City of Culture was not very helpful so the Trade Council with various unions went it alone.

The GMB Hull No1 branch was involved with two of the members Lloyd Dobbs organising the bands and arranging the erection of the stage and sound system. Mick McGarry with the band the Hill Billy Troupe was also a prominent person with the Hill Billy’s starting the event off.

The actually idea was to get youths involved with unions by engaging with youths through music and promoting the union.

The event was held in Queens Gardens, Hull City Centre. This was the first time anything as big as this was tried in Hull by the unions. On fund raising through the different union’s and their branches all the costs were met and dealt with

Although the weather was bad we still got an estimated 5,000 people who came and went throughout the day to listen to the singers and wander around the stalls. Those who were involved have learnt a few things for next year’s event, as everyone agreed it should be done again and those involved enjoyed the day even though it was hard work.

Hopefully from our learning, the event next year will be bigger and better. It will also be held

The feedback for the event and a way forward will not be discussed until the October meeting of the Trade Council. We have built a team that can deliver this again and fund raise to finance an event like this so Watch This Space!

A big thank you to all the officers and reps involved with this event plus a big thank you to Regional officer Mick Coppin for getting and towing the trailer. Thank You All
