Union Learner Rep
My name is Paul Glover and I have recently become a Union Learning Rep (ULR) for GMB. I work at Eastcroft as a Refuse Driver within the local area. I have a learning disability in the form of Dyslexia which means I have always struggled to read and write. Like many people born before the 1990s, my Dyslexia was not recognised at school, therefore I didn’t get much support and I struggled.
I am writing this article to raise awareness of disabilities in the workplace and to encourage others to come forward for help and advice. I’m here to listen and advise you about any issues you may be experiencing around disabilities and difficulties in the workplace and to sign-post you to the relevant services. Common things I have struggled with are things like struggling to read instructions, to fill in forms and to access training. I have recently set up a group for people who struggle with literacy to help them understand the Safe Operations Procedure.
To become a GMB Rep I have had to complete a Trade Union course at Nottingham College. In order to be able to access this course I have needed the support of a Learning Support Assistant – Sarah Meredith. The professional support has given me confidence in the classroom, helped me to understand the course content and learn my role as a Rep through Sarah helping me to read and write in class.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Paul, he is such a hard working an dedicated person. His attitude to learning is brilliant and his ability to openly share about his dyslexia will encourage others to come forward who may also be struggling with a disability.”
