Hull Branch Forum Veterans Weekend Event

This event was a celebration of veterans in the Hull area with participants from all sections of the forces; both days were full of both young and old from all sections of the local community. The GMB stall was visited by veterans who form part of our retired members - all were dressed in smart uniforms and it was nice to speak to members and share their experiences. 


UNISON - A CORRECTION


GMB POSITION REGARDING ENGLAND, WALES & NI LOCAL GOVERNMENT STRIKE ACTION

Unison members have voted for local government strike action and Unite is expected to follow suit.  That action is likely to start with a 2-day strike on 16/17 July, and be continuous.

Although we support this action GMB members will not be going on strike.  This is why:


GMB Advice to Members Regarding Local Government NJC Industrial Action on 16 & 17 July 2008

The Unison and Unite trade unions plan to take strike action on 16 and 17 July in local government including schools.
Only members of those unions are going on strike, and they represent possibly up to half of the workforce.
GMB members are not on strike.  Therefore for GMB members the 16 and 17 July are normal working days. 


Local Government Pay 2008

GMB local government members have voted 4-to-1 to accept this year’s pay offer.  The offer was 2.45% with higher amounts (3.3%) for the lowest three spinal column points 4, 5 and 6.  It is due to be backdated to April but we await the decision of other unions who are balloting their members.

Healthy eating is very much in the forefront of the fight against rising levels of obesity. To help us make the right choices about what we buy, we need clear, easily-read labelling.

Europe-wide food labelling rules are out of date and the European Commission has proposed new front of pack labelling which includes details of percentages and recommended daily allowances.

I do not believe the proposals go far enough.


Local Government Pay 2008

At a national negotiating meeting of the local government NJC Executive yesterday (19 March) the employers made a 2.2% offer.  There will be a further meeting on 2 April when I expect an improved, final offer will be made on which we will consult members.


Justice for Pleural Plaque Sufferers

On October 17th 2007 the House of Lords ruled that pleural plaques cannot be compensated in English law.  The GMB believes that decision must be reversed not least for these reasons.  Please support this campaign by following this link.


GMB Public Services Union

GMB welcomes announcement at Labour Party Conference of new national negotiating body for School Staff.  GMB Hails this as ‘the best news ever for school support staff and pupils.

STOP PRESS!!!!!  GMB members across local government have now voted on the 2007 pay offer - which is 2.475% with a new minimum £6 hourly rate.  The vote shows a 7-to-1 majorty to ACCEPT the offer.


Advice Surgery in Grimsby

GMB Northern Team initiative.  An advice surgery has been set up at the Labour Party Office in Grimsby.

The Remploy Roadshow visits Hull factory and was well received by the membership.


Union Solicitors shame no win, no fee companies

Thompsons Solicitors have won £2,000 for a GMB member’s wife whose claims was turned down by “no win no fee” lawyers.


Massive Victory For GMB Members in Kingston Upon Hull City Council

Following a campaign of petitions and demonstrations, the ruling Liberal Democrats have accepted an amendment to the Hull City Council budget.


Equal pay in the NHS and Local Government

Throughout Local Government and NHS the GMB has been fighting to achieve equal pay. Whether by single status pay and grading deals in Councils or by Agenda for Change in the NHS, the low paid, mainly women, workers who have been under valued for so long now have a real chance to improve their pay and career prospects.
