GMB Public Services Union

GMB Public Services Union, which represents many thousands of school support staff welcomed as ‘the best news ever for school staff and pupils’ the Secretary of State, Ed Balls announcement at Labour Party Conference of the setting up of a new national body for non-teaching staff in schools.  This new body will negotiate pay and conditions for over 300,000 school staff like classroom assistants, school secretaries, nursery nurses and caretakers.  It will initially cover all maintained schools in England.

John Wilson, GMB Senior Organiser said “Alongside teachers, the support staff are the backbone of every school and it’s great that the government recognise their worth”

“We have talented and committed school staff and it will be up to the new body to make it easier for schools to best use them to further our children’s education.  At the same time some of the glaring inefficiencies and inequalities in the employment of school staff can be resolves”.

“GMB is delighted to be invited to be part of the new school support staff body.  We also welcome the intention to appoint an independent chair and we look forward to working with him or her”
